The demand for notifying 4 districts of West Bengal as disturbed areas and extending afspa to the districts by the bjp’s Purulia mp is highly unfortunate and short sighted. While it is true that there has been law and order problems due to the protests against the notification of waqf amendment act but the demand for afspa and disturbed areas declaration is childish in the least. By declaring any area as disturbed you restrict housing and business rights of people and create permanent segregation. Gujarat is a prime example of it. Gradually much of urban Gujarat has been declared disturbed areas and the state has effectively removed entire communities from areas and invisiblised them and their concerns. Doing so in Muslim majority areas would harm the Hindus immeasurably and especially in border areas. This would alienate both communities and create a security threat for the entire region especially as the area is close to the chickens neck area. Similarly afspa for law and order issues is height of immaturity. These are immediate flareups and no organized militia is involved. This is a matter of policing. Paramilitary deployment for short periods allowing the police to take control is necessary but afspa would change the conditions affecting normal life. Bengal has had a long history of political violence including the naxal movement, afspa would permanently change the character of Bengal.
