The G-7 summit this year has started on a farcical basis. Earlier in the morning the Canadian prime minister Carney interrupted a presser by President Trump, saying that as the president and host of the summit he needed to start the proceedings and Trump true to his image left the meeting without signing the statement and blamed the previous Canadian prime minister for removing Russia from the group.
This hallowed elite gathering of the head of states of the seven wealthiest and most powerful countries could not even call for a ceasefire in the Iran Israel conflict. Expressing their support for Israel they paradoxically represent democracy and peaceful world order. With Russia evicted and China not included, it looks like an old boys club of feudal lords. Foregoing their moral claims would make them even more irrelevant. With USA under trump starting to look inwards we saw Carney winning his election on an anti US campaign. NATO is divided over Ukraine, and now G-7 can’t take a stand on Iran. The summit looks like a miniature of all that is going wrong for the world at large.
Back home people are discussing the summit photograph with the conspicuous absence of prime minister Modi. The massive and uncouth protests against him were in bad taste. He really gained nothing by attending this farce and that too on a contentious invitation.
