Another storm brewing in the Bay of Bengal

The 8 months old Muhammad Yunus government in Bangladesh is showing signs of internal turmoil both social and political. The reports of Mr. Yunus offering to resign reflects his apolitical tendencies and inability to face the pulls of the complex political alliance he is leading. Religious extremists, idealist students, the BNP and the military exert opposing pulls on top of it Chinese and American forces have their own agendas. The society and economy both are facing its consequences. The Indian government needs to take note of the situation, an unstable Bangladesh is the last thing we need especially with already tense northern and western borders. Religious tensions are rising and the institutions like the police are yet to recover from the mass anger of the people directed against them last year. We need to engage with diverse social groups there and ensure the security of the Bay of Bengal.
