The extradition of Tahawwur Rana is a significant step in India’s sustained efforts to bring to justice the perpetrators of 26/11 2008 Mumbai shootings. The attack by Pakistan based terrorists coming via sea route is the biggest terror attack ever in the country. 10 fidayeen attackers killed more than 170 people including senior ips officer Hemant karkare and two nsg commandos and many US and Israeli citizens. This led to initiation of parallel investigation by the fbi leading to exposure of an international conspiracy and arrest of David Coleman Headley,Tahawwur Rana and Abu Jundal. While Headley was extradited and turned approver Rana was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment which was completed in 2023. This allowed renewed demand for extradition, especially when he was acquitted in charges for Mumbai attack in US courts. This allowed avoiding the plea against double jeopardy and finally his extradition was allowed. His standing trial would help establish the supremacy of rule of law and bring about closure for the victims of the attack.
