The Indian armed forces have today in a combined operation launched several strikes on suspected terrorist camps both across the line of control and the international border. This is significant as we have perhaps crossed the international border for the first time since 1971. The message is loud and clear, terrorism is war against India and will be dealt accordingly. The forces have though not yet declared the achievement of their objectives. Therefore the operation might not be over as yet. The forces have displayed highest levels of professionalism and competence and have produced proof of success and Pakistan has been forced to accept the attacks. Now it’s upto the Pakistan army to decide if it wants to escalate the conflict. While the political and economic situation in Pakistan remains volatile, the military is facing rising unpopularity both due to uncertain economic conditions and its subversion of democracy by incarcerating Imran khan and installing a puppet regime. The army may not be able to withstand this blow from across the border and may be forced to retaliate, but the decision would largely depend on foreign reactions especially china and the US. As the army has delivered on its mandate, the difficult diplomatic battle lies ahead and it is here that the political leadership will be tested. The sudden withdrawal of tariffs on US imports, immediately before the start of operations might be hinting at it, though it might not be a good example.
Well done India
