The JNU students union election results are indicative of larger churning in the society. While the left managed to retain its strong hold winning the president and vice president positions ABVP managed a comeback after 9 years. What was important here is that the left unity was broken with AISA and SFI forging separate coalitions. ABVP managed a close contest in all the positions while managing to win the joint secretary post. Earlier NSUI had made a strong comeback in DUSU elections in a high voltage election decided through the high court. The effort the RSS-BJP system puts in every election even student body elections is unmatched. They are not ready to budge an inch in the narrative war. Yet these elections in the only significant student body elections in the country, after most states have abolished student elections, point to a general youth unrest fighting against a giant unrelenting machine. The two premier universities of the country are indicating something deeper, which the opposition seems to be oblivious of. The states should restore student elections soon, our democracy needs it especially as we keep getting younger as a nation.
