The dastardly attack on tourists in Kashmir is yet another reminder that all is not well in the UT. Innocent tourists have been killed in cold blood by cowards and no political cause or grievance can justify such inhuman actions. The local population would also be under great stress as tourism was returning after many years of lockdown first for abolition of article 370 and then for the Covid pandemic. This would hit them hard. While bringing the perpetrators to justice is important, restoring public order and reassuring the locals and tourists is urgent. Greater transparency would soothe agitated sentiments across the country. law and order in the UT is a central subject directly overseen by the MHA. The confidence of the locals needs to be strengthened and any hasty step alienating them would be counterproductive. History has taught us difficult lessons. The newly elected government also needs to engage the public on the issue and must make gestures to the tourists as well.
