The sudden resignation of Manipur chief minister Biren Singh has come rather unexpectedly. The state has been burning in sectarian strife since May 2023 and official figures say at 250 dead and more than 60000 displaced. Though unofficial numbers are significantly higher famously a Kiki-zo leader had placed on record more than 200 meiti casualties in a single operation in Khamenlok. The opposition has been demanding the resignation of the CM ever since and was rejected by the home minister himself on the floor of parliament saying he is cooperating completely with the central government. Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has been highlighting the issue consistently and even started his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from the state. It was rewarded by congress winning both the seats from the state. Last month when Mr. Bhalla ex home secretary was sent as governor to the state speculation was rife that something is in the line and this sudden resignation is seen in this light. However we should remember that the PM is leaving on his official visit to the US later this week and the new US administration has already caused enough embarrassment for him. That trump administration is closer to the conservative church which has suffered in the Manipur crisis may have forced him to show some action before his visit.
